When walking in the Hills or trekking along the coast one of the best methods is to Leave a route card at your departure point. Whether, it be a mountain hut (refuge), Youth Hostel, Guest House, Gite D’etape or a hotel. When you arrive at your destination, you then phone and let then know that you have arrived ok!This should be a standard procedure, but most people do not do it! Mountain Rescue teams waste a huge amount of time searching for lost walkers who have failed to lodge a route card at the departure point. A route card is the key to speeding up searches. The card doesn’t have to be elaborate but should include a start and finish point (Grid Reference for both) a brief route description, alternative and escape routes, plus an estimated return or finish time. Plus put on it your Mobile phone number. Failing to complete a route map photo copy the map of your route and mark it out or use modern mapping software and put vital information on the other side.
