When walking in the Hills or trekking along the coast one of the best methods is to Leave a route card at your departure point. Whether, it be a mountain hut (refuge), Youth Hostel, Guest House, Gite D’etape or a hotel.

When you arrive at your destination, you then phone and let then know that you have arrived ok!This should be a standard procedure, but most people do not do it! Mountain Rescue teams waste a huge amount of time searching for lost walkers who have failed to lodge a route card at the departure point.
A route card is the key to speeding up searches. The card doesn’t have to be elaborate but should include a start and finish point (Grid Reference for both) a brief route description, alternative and escape routes, plus an estimated return or finish time. Plus put on it your Mobile phone number.

Failing to complete a route map photo copy the map of your route and mark it out or use modern mapping software and put vital information on the other side.

Get into the habit and Stay Safe. Remember it doesn’t take long to do and could save your life!
